DebAWeek: msttcorefonts
Submitted by specialj on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 16:30.This package downloads and installs the “Microsoft Core Fonts”. This is extremely useful for web developers but also beneficial to users since many websites are designed with these fonts in mind and specify them in their cascading stylesheets (css). So with these fonts installed more websites will be displayed as intended. The installation is simple: once the package is installed it downloads the fonts from the web and installs them into the system.

Submitted by specialj on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 15:19.I try to keep Firefox as light as possible and so I try and choose my add-ons carefully. Of course it helps that certain extensions have gotten better over time such that they obsolete other extensions. So here is my current list of essential extensions for Firefox.
Finding a suitable password manager in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Submitted by specialj on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 02:01.Like most users these days I have many user accounts on various websites. Dealing with security can be quite an issue with so many passwords. A lot of accounts, say to a discussion board, are not too problematic if the credentials get compromised. For other sites, like financial or email services, compromise represents significantly more danger. It is wise not to use the same usernames and passwords on different servers for the reason that if 1 gets compromised others are put at risk. I find it’s best to use a password manager and generate passwords for various sites and keep the password file protected by a strong password or passphrase that changes regularly. I also find that it helps keep such accounts organized so I don’t lose track of them. I wanted to see if there was an application that would suit my needs using Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
Third party package repositories for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Submitted by specialj on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 00:25.When upgrading to a new Ubuntu or Debian release I always find myself cleaning out my list of third party repositories that have accumulated on the system since the last release. However, I’ve already found a few software packages that are not present or not up to date on my system for which I need third party repositories. I’ve decided to compile the list of what I’m using now and update that list as I make changes in the future.
List of BitTorrent clients in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Submitted by specialj on Sun, 10/21/2007 - 18:37.When doing research looking for a new BitTorrent client I decided to keep track of the various packages I found. This list is only dedicated BitTorrent clients and does not include other software with BitTorrent support nor web based BitTorrent clients. I divided it into lists based on the graphics library (or lack thereof) used. I personally prefer a client be GTK-based so that it can be used as easily under Gnome as KDE. I have also noted the programming language used for each project.
